In a very prominent manner, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has expressed their joy over the Star Label programme in Southern States. Andhra Pradesh and other Southern State Designated Agencies (SDAs) have been aggressively promoting the Star-Label programme to help India achieve its climate and energy targets.
Before World Environment Day 2025, BEE’s Secretary Milind Deore called upon Andhra Pradesh to keep on going with the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) initiative that aims at turning consumers into conscious ones. Simple and effective actions like setting the air-conditioner to 24°C or more, switching off appliances that are not used, and using 5-star rated appliances were highly suggested.
The talk is not just on symbolic level. BEE sees that behavioral changes can cause that India saves 22.5 billion kWh electricity annually. This will not only directly go towards emission cuts, but also contribute to India’s commitment on cleaner energy and climate change, along with energy security.
BEE looked at the State Designated Agencies in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu as the main factors that along with the actions they took boosted the spread of awareness, substantiated consumer trust, organized market surveillance, and thus created energy-efficient appliances. The The Star-Label programme, which is an energy efficiency labelling system for consumers to identify energy efficient products, is at the core of a clean and green India and has already saved the nation thousands of crores in energy costs besides reducing millions of tones of CO₂.
In a historic achievement, Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Ltd (APEPDCL) has set a record in the country by becoming the first electricity distribution company to launch an e-retail platform in partnership with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) This step not only facilitates the consumers to get energy-efficient products such as 5-star rated LEDs, BLDC fans, and air conditioners but also creates an official platform for them thus enabling an extension of trust and reach.
The result has been clear: the state of Andhra Pradesh only has saved more than 81 billion kWh and has prevented the release of almost 58 million tonnes of CO₂ so far in the FY 2022-23 period.
This triumph tale not only underscores the influence of policy and alliances but also positions a standard for other states to follow. With the Southern SDAs spearheading the drive, India is undoubtedly moving towards an energy-efficient economy firmly anchored in sustainable lifestyle decisions.
